Dems Challenge Melton's Residency
Dems Challenge Melton's Residency On April 4, Jackson resident James Rice asked the Jackson Municipal Democratic Executive Committee to take a second look at the qualifications of Democratic mayoral candidate Frank Melton, asserting that Melton was not qualified to run in the district because he had not filed homestead exemption there. Rice, wielding a printout from the Hinds County Tax Assessor’s Web site, questioned whether Melton’s campaign could be derailed by Republican opponents. (A Mississippi Supreme Court ruling says that the homestead exemption can set a strong precedent for determining where a candidate lives.) “My fear is that if Mr. Melton wins the primary and then gets disqualified by someone challenging his residency, the Democrats will have lost their seat,” Rice said. Melton’s deadline for filing homestead exemption was April 1. The Jackson Free Press has taped recordings of Melton telling the same commission on March 9 that he had filed homestead exemption in Jackson. Melton had previously filed for homestead exemption in Tyler, Texas, in 1997, and hadn’t filed elsewhere since. Jackson Free Press Comments
Just a few questions that were (mysteriously) not asked by the crack team of reporters at the JFP. Why wasn’t the protest brought in a timely manner according to the 10 day challenge period that the party sets forth? Are the protesters "the plumbers" as well? Who found the information regarding the homestead exemption and under what context were they doing the research? Had it been prompted? If so, by whom? Did the presenters seek legal counsel before filing the protest? Why was the media notified about the planned protest, but not certain members of the Executive Committee nor the Melton campaign? Wouldn’t it have been better for the party to try and ascertain the truth behind closed doors rather than in the media? If Melton does win the primary, will the protesters work just as hard to support him? I have asked many of these same questions to some figures close to this matter and hope to have their answers back as well. Shouldn't surprise anyone why the JFP was provided with whatever tapes exist. No one can truthfully say that the JFP isn't working for Johnson's re-election. Its logical that the tapes would be provided to a hyper-supportive local publication which does not hide the fact that the bias of its publisher and editor is reflected in its work. Johnson's problem is that the JFP has no real influence in Jackson. Posted by: TC Stein at April 6, 2005 09:41 AMPoint of interest: I was there when Melton answered 'yes,' to Jackson Democratic Committee Chairman McInnis' question concerning his filing of Homestead. It really didn't take a lot of work to stand there and press the 'on' button on the tape recorder. Bias? So What? EVERY media outlet is biased, whether Fox News or The Guardian of London! Kind of a cheap way to score debating points, isn't it? Posted by: filrabat at April 9, 2005 08:44 AM"If Melton does win the primary, will the protesters work just as hard to support him?" More important question would be: Jackson - my answer is "God, I hope so". I hope Republican and Democrat, rich and poor, black and white, young and old can get behind someone together. My question was for all of the people making a big deal about the Democratic party being the end-all be-all, you would think that they would be behind the party's nominee no matter who it is. I don't care if it's Melton, Johnson or Whitlow, but I think it is time that we come together instead of trying to split people apart. That doesn't mean the winner, whoever it is, gets a pass on execution. But hopefully, we will elect someone with a clear mandate to get something done. Posted by: Alan Lange at April 15, 2005 11:07 AMAmen to coming together! From most of the posts on this site, I get the feeling that NE Jackson is saying "my candidate or the highway". You have been pushing this "us and them" divisiveness far beyond any hope of being constructive, and probably have slipped across the boarder into laughable. I haven't heard any constructive or substantiated criticism of Johnson or any ideas for solutions from Melton. Just a bunch or angry mudslinging and conspiracy theories, the tone of which has frankly made me lose interest in even trying to figure out who Melton is. Jackson: There are so many accusations/inaccuracies in your last post, it is pretty hard to deal with them all. Judge the site for what you will. Right now, on the main page, there are pro and con posts for all three major candidates and only one or two of those posts are mine. I have donated money to the Melton campaign. There's no hiding that. I was a pretty big Johnson supporter last election. Go figure. I have offered the forum to a lot of people. A few have taken me up on it. I would offer it to you too to write whatever you want so long as its clean, legible and attributable by name to a US resident. Be engaged or be disengaged. That's your right. However, my sense is that this board is pretty reflective of the overall sentiment in the community right now. I guess we'll all see after the primaries and after the general election. Posted by: Alan Lange at April 15, 2005 01:18 PMJackson: Have you seen any of Harvey Johnson's campaign commercials and how long have you been living in Jackson? Johnny Posted by: Johnny at April 15, 2005 03:05 PMAccusations/inaccuracies? I made no accusations nor attempted to state any facts. Just my reaction to the tone of Melton's supporters on this site. If anything I am trying to help you by pointing out that there may be other folks out there who are also having a hard time getting beyond the he said she said nit picking and "liberal meda" bashing. If you feel you can do a better job reporting the issues, then please do it. Posted by: Jackson at April 15, 2005 03:42 PMThe "my candidate or the highway" mentality is not restricted to NE Jackson. It just seems to make more sense (at least to me) coming from those folks. As far as Harvey's most adament supporters go: if NE Jackson supports a man, he must be the reason America's progress has slowed. That means NE Jackson resists progress, which would explain their superlow property value and small ugly houses. Not to say that success is measured in dollars. There are many more valuable things in the world. But NE Jackson does represent sound financial decisions, smart planning, and sound judgement. I think NE Jackson-ers have a very valuable opinion and shouldn't be written off as rich beaurocrats not worth listening to. It's obvious many of them are angry. We non-NE Jacksoners must ask ourselves...what are these smart successful people so upsetabout? Oh, wait, they've told us. Clearly. Crime. Poverty. Lack of good education.
