    Jackson's future? Woodie's World ...

    Jackson's future? Woodie's World ...

Woodie's World. That's it. That's the blueprint. That has to be the goal for Frank Melton, Jackson's hope, Jackson's new mayor, the most important electoral hire in decades.

It was on the front of the newspaper Tuesday, Woodie's World. There's an estate sale this weekend, 402 Alta Woods Blvd. Woodie and Ruby's daughters are selling much of the stuff their parents collected over a lifetime.

With Woodie, like with Bono or Madonna or, now, Frank, the last name is very nearly redundant. Assaf. Woodie Assaf. For 50 years he was the face of WLBT, the voice of Channel 3, everybody's neighbor, everybody's friend, everybody's favorite uncle.

Woodie was a rock star around here before there was rock. Through births and deaths, tornadoes and hurricanes, segregation and integration, civil rights and civil wrongs, for half a century Woodie was there, like morning sunshine.

He was Jackson. He was us. He was kind and gentle. He was the sweetest guy in the world.

    That would be Woodie's World.

And that's the challenge for Frank, isn't it? To recreate Woodie's World, a kinder, gentler, more neighborly place ...

    NO! THAT'S NOT FRANKS' TASK!

Frank's task is to take Jackson into the 21st century with some solid goals for Jackson leading to a larger economic base. In turn enriching the future of our children and this state.

Woodies World was Mayberry for my generation who was into PFunk and Prosperity. We hated how Jackson was then. a bland skeleton of a city that could do better if it only tried. We begged for Jackson to "step it up" like Atlanta, Dallas or New Orleans. Being progressive in our thinking is what got me and my friends still living here hoping this new millennium will bring about some serious change and growth in Jackson. THAT'S WHAT FRANK'S TASK IS.

Jackson needs a facelift, NOT the packing on of more make up!

Jackson is Mississippi's largest city and needs to start acting like it!

Jackson can be kindler, gentler and still have some symbolance of a city that's on the move.

Posted by: political pimp at June 22, 2005 02:09 PM

Poor pitiful pimp, if you only had a clue about the goodness of Woody, and what Woody's world would be.
Maturity tells us (it did me) that more isn't better.

Posted by: Al at June 22, 2005 06:36 PM

Al: I'm not saying to grow to be as big as say Houston or Dallas or Atlanta for that matter. BUT I am saying, bring in enough commerce to go around and stop suffocating the economy by keeping a salaray cap on the jobs and opportunity, which leads to crime and poverty.

Jackson can be a thriving city without having to grow "physically". Right now Jackson is like a small country town with over 185,000 residents..LOL...that's just silly.

When people visit they go "huh?" how can so many people live in one place and have aboslutely nothing to aspire to but crime?

No jobs, No culture, Weak infrastructure, No tangible opportunities for the youth to get into, just silent segregation and crime. That's why it's so easy to recruit and breed drug dealers in this city and that's why Frank won so easily.

You people want Jackson to be a one horse town with Ma'Belle sitting on the porch sipping mint julip while listening to the cool wind skate through the trees.

    NEW FLASH!

Jackson has become an Urban Metropolis aka
mid-size city and it's no going to ever be a small town again so smell the Folgers and get with the program.

Posted by: political pimp at June 23, 2005 09:01 AM

I've worked two jobs all my life and I'm sick of it. Jackson needs to bring in enough commerce to where I can find ONE job that I can roll with to sustain me. I'm not trying to go back to food stamps.

Jackson needs $$ in the tax base.

Nissan was ours, we dropped the ball. none of you will disagree with me on that. I've applied there, still waiting.

the Farish Street District should be done, up and running within the first 3 years of Frank's administration, not 15 years down the road after he's gone. the future of our tax base depends on it.

    King Edward renovation (see FSD)

Ebbers is gone, fantastic! Clinton needs to get their money off that big lot that Worldcomm built right? Sell it to Jackson and let's Lease it out to another mid-size to big business from out of state and invite them to come and spend money to help build up our financial infrastructure. promote the city as a place where businesses can grow and is also family oriented and you'll have the kind of Jackson that Jackson was meant to be.

Right now, Jackson is wrought with crooked politicians tieing up money and ideas via filibusters and red tape, but change is inevitable.

"you people" what does that sound like????

Posted by: Al at June 25, 2005 07:56 AM

Al: Sounds like I'm addressing "you people", meaning the people on this site.

Posted by: political pimp at June 27, 2005 09:42 AM

    Pimp:

I don't speak for everyone on this site, but I believe that "you people" on this site want the same things for Jackson you do. And I agree with you, that the Farish Street project should be completed within the first term of Mr. Frank's Administration. The City of Jackson needs to get that project completed yesterday.

But in moving Jackson forward, there is no need to tear down everything that is old, such as the old neighborhoods along Capitol Street where the Bon Air HUD Housing Project will displace as many as 300 black families, through the use of Eminent Domain Law, to build a HUD Housing Project.

Posted by: Johnny at June 27, 2005 10:11 AM

    Pimp:

I'll be watching to see what Mr. Frank does with the Bon Air HUD Project.

I'll be watching to see if he allows this project to go forward, thereby making him just another HUD-Pimp like Harvey Johnson, Kenneth Stokes and Bo Brown.

Johnny - do we have any clue how many people in Jackson are getting Sect. 8 assistance either in houses or apartments? Just wondering what the percentage of Jackson's overall population it is.

Posted by: Jane at June 27, 2005 12:44 PM

    Jane:

I believe I saw a number of about 3000 at one time, but I think the number is much higher -- based upon the number of apartment alone west of I-55.

If I were to make a guess right now, I would say the number is closer to 10,000 or much more just in Jackson.

I'm sure "how many" is something the public is going to find hard to get an answer to.

    Johnny

Posted by: Johnny at June 27, 2005 02:58 PM

The upside of having 10,000 Sect. 8 families is that Jackson will always have at least 10,000 residents who won't flee to the 'burbs. Of course, they are the ones who are largely responsible for the flight.

Posted by: Jane at June 27, 2005 03:14 PM

    Jane:

Since you've taken the upside, I take the downside and what concerns me the most, that being the base of operation for most of the ciminal activity in Jackson.

"Having 10,000 families in Section-8 Housing and/or any other federally funded housing program, means that you have the potential of having 10,000 thugs living with their girlfriend and using her Section-8 funded housing as his base of operation for his criminal activity, such as the one you had across the street from you and the one I have living in the Section-8 apartment next to me.

    Jane:

I live in Precinct-2 which has long been the highest crime precinct in Jackson.

A few years back, Commander Eric Walls headed Precinct-1 which is in south Jackson. For a short time Precinct-1 became the highest crime precinct in Jackson, and when asked by the Clarion-Ledger why south Jackson had suddenly become the highest crime are in Jackson, he said it was because of the (Section-8) apartments.

This is the same cop that took a team into Presidential Hills just before the General Election for mayor and arrested 72-suspected drug dealers, meaning that I think that we can assume from this that he knows what he is talking about in regards to the (Section-8) apartments and crime.

Eric Walls is the only JPD officer to ever make (or have the balls to publicly admit to) the connection between crime in Jackson and Section-8 apartments.

    Johnny

Posted by: Johnny at June 27, 2005 03:44 PM

The reason why the rate of crime in south Jackson shot up, was because they were tearing down the apartments in Precinct-2, leaving all of these Section-8 tenants with but one place to go, that being south Jackson to Precinct-1.

Posted by: Johnny at June 27, 2005 03:48 PM

Well, Melton doesn't hire the DA but apparently he talked to her last week about doing her job (that was when he found out that one of the three involved in the McDonald's shooting had never been prosecuted for something Frank had arrested him on at MBN). He needs to take the same approach to whoever's head of Sect. 8 now and demand that they enforce the regs.

Posted by: Jane at June 27, 2005 04:33 PM

Johnny: LOL...HUD and Section 8 aren't the base operations for drug activity. poverty, not enough jobs in Jackson, some have 1 misdemeanor on their record and not even Rally's will hire them, displacing young black men to the streets is the cause of the upswing in crime.

Now Frank is going to do his sworn duty to throw as many young men in jail as possbile so the perception will be that there is now enough to go around. let's eat off the fat of the land.

Jackson is suffering from what NFL Owners call "Salary Cap Issues"

I promise you, if Frank would bring more jobs instead of lobbying for more jails via "tough on crime" rhetoric, Jackson can solve it's high crime issues.

Biloxi and Gulport are perfect examples of this.

More jobs, less crime. simple math.

Posted by: political pimp at June 28, 2005 08:35 AM

...Therefore, these people are forced to get HUD because that's all they can afford. then it become run down because the lanlord is negligent about the upkeep of the property. trash accumilates. bushes grow. trees fall. hideouts to sell drugs are made. crime rises.

Enough with the section 8 comments. I have been renting to section 8/HUD tenants for over 5 years now and I have not seen or heard of any drug activity in or on my properties. How many folks on this web-site have bought drugs from the so called dealers living with their girlfriends in section 8 apartments or homes? Right, probably none. Section eight is HELPING young and old live their life in a nice home. Most of you don't need help, you have family, training, education. I have a tenant who has 3 teens in college. One at Ole Miss, and 2 at Tougaloo College. I know most of you think these programs should go away, well, I disagree. Job creation and education is the key to all of our success, not just Jackson, but your community as well. Lets keep our talent in Mississippi and stop beating each other communities down. Frank has a litany of concerns that should be addressed in Jackson, I'm willing and able to do my part, will YOU.

Posted by: MAURICE at June 28, 2005 01:53 PM

I disagree with the Farish Street project completely. It was and is a waste of money. If you want to revitalize downtown Jackson, you need to give businesses an incentive to come back downtown (like tax breaks) and have them start where there's actual life, like E. Capitol. Slapping a coat of paint on a rotten slum in an effort to appease a voting bloc is bad enough, but to dress it up as a genuine effort to revitalize the city is downright offensive.

Exactly how many businesses have relocated there? Maybe all those "real" Jacksonians who were all too eager to spend the taxpayers' money should move there. Let's see Jeff Good or Malcolm White or Donna Ladd move their establishments to Farish. Don't hold your breath.

Posted by: LTJ at June 28, 2005 02:19 PM

    Maurice:

Everyone in Section-8 Housing is not a drug dealer, and that is something I will admit to. But the vast majority of people living in Section-8 Housing, with the knowledge of their landlord, is defrauding the program and/or allowing people (criminal elements) to live there in violation of the federal rules and regulations.

The people that I'm most interested in removing from the program are the ones that are abusing it.

I have no interest in hurting the innocent that comply with the rules and regulations.

It may be that you have no criminal activity coming from your Section-8 apartments, but that could be because you or a good landlord, and because I don't have the information to say otherwise, I'll make that assumption.

But with regards to criminal activity and Section-8 Housing, I have some experience in this area as someone that has had to deal with some criminal elements in Section-8 Housing in my neighborhood, and I've got the video and still-pictures to support my perspective on Section-8 Housing being the base of operation for most of the criminal activity in Jackson.

Posted by: Johnny at June 28, 2005 02:28 PM

    LTJ:

If Frank Melton had been mayor when the Farish Street project started, your approach probably would have been taken.

But you know -- Harvey. No ideas that don't involve government funding and no interest in any projects that require him to work with the private sector.

    Johnny

Posted by: Johnny at June 28, 2005 02:45 PM

Agreed, Johnny. Only a person who exudes arrogance and exhibits supreme confidence that he is unbeatable would do some of the things that Harvey pulled. HJ was convinced that the black community would never vote against Jackson's first black mayor, so he basically did as he pleased and pulled stupid stunts like arguing with the voters that crime was a perception. I honestly think Harvey thought the majority of the crime bellyaching was coming from the (ever shrinking) white population in NE Jackson and that the black folks weren't all that concerned w/it, when the fact is that the black community has the largest number of crime victims by far. My black neighbors are far more vocal about the crime problem than my white neighbors, and as I've said numerous times, just because that murder is happening in another part of town doesn't make one feel safer. This city is all of ours and it doesn't matter what color the crime victim is or where he lives. Harvey never got that and kept ignoring it, so the voters stuck it up his a$$.

I don't know if Frank will be a success as mayor, but we were in one of those "anything's better than the incumbent" elections. My only concern about Frank is that the "little" things (road repair, city maintenance) will take a back seat to big ticket, media splash events, like rounding up drug dealers. Don't get me wrong, the crime problem is numero uno and it needs serious attention, but I just hope the Melton administration doesn't neglect the other issues that this (and any) city has.

Posted by: LTJ at June 29, 2005 02:54 PM

    LTJ:

Good points. I think your analysis was dead on. I think to your point about how Melton will deal with minutea, look at his appointments. Robert Walker was a master stroke in that he has been mayor of a city and knows those sorts of issues. In a strong #2 role, I think he will have the lattitude to make sure that stuff gets done.

My bet is that things will start to crystalize shortly on appointments deeper in the administration. I hope they will be solid managers who can take big directives and get things done.
