Barbours Visit Mayor Melton at City Hall
Barbours Visit Mayor Melton at City Hall Governor Haley Barbour and first lady Marsha Barbour went to city hall in Jackson Wednesday to pay a visit to newly elected Mayor Frank Melton. From the smiles on their faces, you would never have known Barbour had fired Melton as Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, when Barbour was first elected in 2004. They met behind closed doors, in the mayor's ceremonial office at City Hall, which will become the office of Melton Chief of Staff, former Vicksburg Mayor Robert Walker. When they came out to face TVcameras, they were all smiles. Melton revealed he had recruited Mrs. Barbour, to help him with an initiative aimed at keeping kids in school. Barbour talked about how important it is for Melton to succeed. The Governor said, "I'm excited about what it means, let me just say this, if Jackson is not at it's best, Mississippi is not at it's best." Barbour said he was, "very optimistic about where Frank Melton will take this city." Melton described it as "a blessed day for the State of Mississippi, for me to have the honor, to stand with the governor and first lady." WLBT

A master stroke. I think Haley knows a good thing when he sees one (politically-speaking). An incoming mayor with an 89% mandate deserves a house call. When was the last time anyone remembered the Mayor of Jackson HUGGING the Governor of Mississippi. I have 34 years on the watch, and I don't remember it once. The ALT.mayor-watchers have to be just beside themselves that they are not on board with this. Haley's good, but someone would have to do a lot of convincing to make me believe that he fired Frank as part of a larger plan to have him in the Mayor's office. Posted by: zuckerman at July 12, 2005 09:17 AMthank god, you're in. harvey johnson was buying re-election as his wife, a banker, was handling individuals connected with the mayor in the private banking division of amsouth bank. is there no wonder so much was happening under his leadership. and now, city workers/contractors on payroll are working on the new home he's building. can you clean house? also, under your leadership can the city's airport expand to include nice restaurant as all of those in flowood (rankin county) can not serve cocktails as it is a dry county vs. a recording studio on farish street? we need tourism coming in to support the convention center. we will need to be able to compete with ridgeland, ms as they have a hotel/shopping/entertainment/condo complex called harborwalk. i believe most will prefer to stay in a hotel near the airport which takes in the beauty of the natchez trace and ross barnett reservoir & a marina and near the airport vs. staying in a hotel complex in downtown jackson. I'd venture the city employees who were for years stealing fuel to the tune of hundreds of thousands of Jackson taxpayer dollars per year are no longer pleased that we have a new Mayor. Those employees probably agreed with the alt whack jobs and wanted to retain the existing Mayor since he brought so much experience to the table. The fact that his experience was lacking specific expertise in best practice methods/techniques for sound fiscal and budgetary management did not concern either group. There had to be a reason why those department level management information reports on fuel consumption weren't reviewed on any regular basis, if at all. Hmmm, I wonder why?
