Melton steps up to the plate
Jackson Mayor Frank Melton said he would help build the "Homerun for Habitat'' house in the capital city.
Melton will join volunteers for the build that runs on eight Saturdays in a row beginning 8 a.m. on Aug. 6.
A charity softball game on June 18 between the Media Giants and Barbour's Bombers at Mississippi Braves Trustmark Park in Pearl raised $25,000 to build the home at 205 Hite Street. Members of the teams and fans plan to assist.
Third District U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering, who tossed out the first pitch at the event, hopes to work it into his schedule to help build the home. Already signed up: Sen. Mike Chaney, R-Vicksburg, who enjoys building on his farm in Warren County.
