Turnabout: Melton Changes Story About Leak
Turnabout: Melton Changes Story About Leak In a chain of events reminiscent of New York Times reporter Judith Miller being jailed over an unnamed source in the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame, Clarion-Ledger Washington bureau reporter Ana Radelat last week filed notice of appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court to avoid revealing an unnamed source used in an April 18, 2003, article. The appeal came after Lauderdale County Circuit Judge Robert Bailey ordered the reporter to disclose her source in a pending civil case, holding that her First Amendment right to refuse to disclose confidential sources was “not absolute.” Also reminiscent of the Plame case, the protected source—Mayor Frank Melton—has chosen to relieve the reporter of her burden, instead revealing himself to the court, even though he previously denied under oath what he is now admitting.

Over on the anti-mayor blog, they are fast and furious to do some gotcha journalism on Melton. Per the article, also reminiscent of the Plame story is that this is completely hyped by hysterical opponents of the mayor and their friends in the media (in this case, I use that term loosely). Even further reminiscent of the Plame/Rove incident is that absolutely nothing of any importance will come of it. By the way, you heard it here first. They had to write the editorial piece a couple of weeks ago to set this up because if they had just launched into this type of gotcha before saying "bygones are bygones", they would have had less credibility than they already have. Expect more of this to come. I guess they figure since the unwashed masses are too stupid to elect the right guy that they will, through divine inspiration, help try to knock off the "bad guy" by constantly being the burr in the saddle instead of being a positive force for change. Like I said at the time . . . you heard it here first. Posted by: Alan at July 22, 2005 09:08 AMWhen I find someone continually obnoxious, a great way to mess with them is to say something that sounds like AGREEMENT with their point....and it can be fun..so if you see me over there, there ya go! Posted by: Al at July 22, 2005 11:57 PMYou heard it first here! Alan is laying the groundwork for blaming the downfall of the Melton administration on the JFP. "Thanks for the continuing [silliness], such is always impressive to see." Posted by: Jackson at July 23, 2005 04:20 PMSilliness is when some in their tower call people stupid and gennerally disrespect them while not being able to take critisim themselves...have a nice life silly people, with your pious resentments. Posted by: Al at July 23, 2005 05:03 PMJust because the CL doesn't print it doesn't mean it is not news. The CL is also conflicted in this case, which puts the story square into the alt media. Unlike Rove, Melton signed a statement that was clearly false. I don't know how far this will go, but I am glad to be able to follow it. If it wasn't your man you wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it either. I'm sure you have supported the ftying of bigger fish for far less. Posted by: Jackson at July 23, 2005 05:57 PMJackson (FP), Trust me, Melton's administration will sink or swim REGARDLESS of the influence of a narrowband alt+weekly. I would say so far so good. Budget time will be interesting. That in my mind will be the first real test. In the responses to this story, I have glanced through and seen the repeated beating up on how the CL runs their outfit. They need an ombudsman, their editorials are out of whack, etc. Here's my advice. Build a product that competes heads up with the CL and stop bitching about the CL. They obviously don't care so it is pretty much just screaming into the wind. It is a free and open market. Posted by: Alan at July 23, 2005 09:50 PMThat's Jackson MS, not FP. If JFP staff read this blog that would be news to me. I just like having them in town, and don't understand your obsession in constantly trying to smear them will false motives. I agree, Melton's administration will sink or swim whether our news outlets keep us informed or not. So why place the bulk of your efforts running this site on anti-alt rants? I am not bitching about the CL. I think it is a somewhat lame paper, but what do you want? They're dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. Their bottom line is staying out of trouble and selling newspapers. If you don't think the JFP is "being a positive force for change" then your just not paying attention. No, I just think all your conspiracy theories are a bit over the top. Posted by: Jackson at July 23, 2005 10:32 PM"(JFP) Build a product that competes heads up with the CL." She's intelligent enough to do so, but too narrowly focused to the left to succeed. To borrow a word from the mouth of Brother Stokes, the JFP is just Clique News. Johnny Posted by: Johnny at July 23, 2005 11:58 PMIt's obvious that America's media is fragmenting, in no small part thanks to the Web. Our media's going the same way as Britian's - some major papers unapologetically left, some unapologetically right, with others with some mix of the two. Jackson's experiencing this right now. Actually, I find this good for our nation's (and Jackson's) media, since no one group can control the show. Posted by: PRB at July 29, 2005 02:36 PMP.S. The news media as we've come to know it (not just in Jackson) is either history or at least will be radically altered! Welcome to the 21st century! Posted by: PRB at July 29, 2005 02:40 PMJackson's experiencing this right now. Only in the purest sense since you are not factoring in scale. When you do consider scale, the two weeklies (one paid, one an alt whack job) that are critical of every move made by our new Mayor -- the same two that doubled as campaign mouthpieces for our former Mayor's campaign -- don't bring enough scale to the table to swing any discussion one way or the other. The campaign proved their influence too small to measure.
