Renovation or wrecking ball: Melton aims at King Edward
Renovation or wrecking ball: Melton aims at King Edward Mayor Frank Melton first went after the Jackson Apartments. Now he's after the King Edward Hotel. Jackson's mayor on Friday gave his staff 30 days to submit a plan to renovate the King Edward Hotel or he says he will push to have it demolished. The city acquired the empty and rundown landmark last year and helped arrange a deal to start work on the 82-year-old building. The holdup now is on his administration's part, mainly because the city needs a $1.6 million grant to clean up environmental problems in and around the building and to assess its structural stability. Clarion Ledger Comments
David Watkins is a great Jacksonian and is willing to take a big risk to make the King Edward become a reality. The city needs to step up and hold up their end of the bargain with regards to the prospective demolition. From there, if it can become a reality, it's worth everyone's time and effort to try. Posted by: Alan at July 24, 2005 07:45 AMDemolition is not a smart option, put down the crack pipe. Posted by: political pimp at July 27, 2005 06:36 PMThe King Edward is full of pigeon shit which is dangerous (cryptosomething - bad, bad lung thing that can cause brain damage and kill). I was under the impression that the cost to remove the pigeon shit was so expensive as to make renovation financially implausible. I'm not making this up. Posted by: Jane at July 27, 2005 06:41 PMPimp: I think you misheard me. The city agreed to go through and do a phase 1 demolition so that the engineers could look at the "bones" of the building and see if it was even able to be saved. Everyone thinks it is, but doesn't know for sure. If the city does its part, there is still a chance that the deal will not be able to happen. If it can happen, I think it should happen. But it needs to happen on a timeframe and not be open ended. Get a plan and do it or knock it to the ground. Posted by: Alan at July 27, 2005 08:35 PMAlan: I agree that a scope of the structure needs to happen, we damn sure don't want the thing caving in on people 3 years later. But revitalizing such a beautiful historic building is something that should seriously be considered to bring this city back to life.
The major concerns are the floors, walls, elevaor shafts, beams of concrete, metal framing, roof, electrical, windows...etc.. completing this project will advance Jackson faster than the Convention center because it immediately brings in money...it's a HOTEL. I'd like to see mini-shops on the ground floor although I've never seen the inside of the place. Posted by: political pimp at July 29, 2005 08:32 AMIt will also be a great place to market the Farish Street district. TOURISTS NEED A PLACE TO STAY...not mention BIG BUSINESS MEN LIKE DUECE MCALLISTER AND DONALD TRUMP....not to forget UNION STATION. Posted by: political pimp at July 29, 2005 08:35 AMI assume pigeon shit is expensive to clean up because it's a biohazard. The city had to pay workers comp. death benefits some 8 years ago to an employee who died allegedly as a result of having been in the King Edward to inspect it. If you want to clean it up, I'm sure you will have to sign a release. Posted by: Jane at July 29, 2005 09:26 AMPimp: I am all about having the King Edward revitalized. I think that would be good for the city, but not so good that we need to evaluate it for another 2 years. It is time to SH** or get off the pot. I think it is going to go. The plan and people backing the plan are solid. The city just has to come through on their end of the deal. With just the pure logistics of mayoral transition, that obviously was difficult. Posted by: Alan at July 29, 2005 09:33 AMBy the way, I have always been a proponent of finding some ancient codicil that said some indian tribe actually owned that land at one point and transferring ownership to make a casino out of the King Edward. That would rock! :-) Posted by: Alan at July 29, 2005 09:34 AMcompleting this project will advance Jackson faster than the Convention center because it immediately brings in money...it's a HOTEL. That is stating the obvious, isn't it? Considering that the CCCC will be a giant sucking vortex of red ink, it won't be hard for a new KE to put direct and indirect dollars into city coffers. BUT, if the plan is to exempt the KE for [x] number of years from property taxation and, or, to pump millions of city dollars into the project as Harvey was considering, then my vote, and my voice to my councilperson will be to bring it down. Above and beyond this $1.6m grant to make an assessment possible the project must be privately financed. We've spent enough downtown for now, if we have money to invest we must do so in our poor neighborhoods. This notion being furthered by the alt whack jobs that, if torn down, the lot where the KE sits will just sit vacant for another 20 years is nothing more than a bad case of NIH and junk progressive thunk. One of Leland Speed's REITs, or Duckworth, would snap that lot up in a heartbeat. Posted by: Contrarian at July 29, 2005 09:54 AMMaple St. complex cleanup begins
Last week, the mayor put city staff on 30-day notice to restart the project. The downtown landmark has been vacant since the 1960s. The project had been held up since November by a $1.6 million grant the city needed from the federal Office of Housing and Urban Development. Frank, watch these Kool-Aid terrorist from the Department of Housing and Urban Destruction. There's something more that pigeon shit on the minds of these people at HUD. How many of the 120 apartment, planned for the King Edward, do they want for their urban terrorist in the Section-8 Housing Program? Frank, if it's the Kool-Aid & Section-8 to get the $1.6M, give the pigeons a head start, then blow the SOB up. Johnny Posted by: Johnny at July 29, 2005 09:55 AMI don't see how a vacant lot would be worse than what is there now. Posted by: Jane at July 29, 2005 10:21 AMI have always love the style of the King Edward Hotel, and like Pimp and I suspect you, I would like to see it restored to its former glory. Anything that we can do to save that building, I'm for. My concern is HUD. I don't want these people involved in what the King Edward becomes. We have seen what the wrong HUD tenants can do to a neighborhood, so why should we give them access to downtown loot by way of the King Edward?
