Jackson Mayor Asks for Resignations
Jackson Mayor Asks for Resignations Mayor Frank Melton asked for the resignations of all members of Jackson City Boards and Commissions today. This includes the Airport Authority, the Civil Service Commission, the School Board, the Redevelopment Board, and the Election Commission. T The news release says that resumes will be accepted and considered for any reappointment to a board. Melton says that the action was quote "to assure that the necessary policies and programs are initiated." There are twenty-two such boards and commission in the city. 7/27/5

You can bet that over on the anti-mayor blog, they already have the daggers out questioning the judgement of this and of terminating the fire chief. I am absolutely sure there is a whole lot behind both decisions that I or anyone else in the general public are not privy to. Overall, I think this is a good thing. These boards are important. Especially as Wyatt Emmerich noted recently, Mayor Johnson's administration was built on patronage. If Melton senses resistance to his version of city progress, he is within his right to ask. The real interesting question will be will some people put up a legal fight to stay. Either way, those that are with the new program and those that are not will show up like deer eyes in the headlights. Melton is masterfully wielding his 88% victory like a sword. It gives him ammo to do the right things in a shorter time. Sure, he could have formed a study to get the Upper Level nightclub to clean up his act, but he knew he had the bully pulpit. So, he forced their hand, and very quickly got them to comply. For people who thought/banked-on-the-fact that he would act stupidly, just look at what he has gotten done so far. He is getting some good advice, I am sure, but most of this is going on his gut. It is what got him elected. Now he just needs to keep it up. He made three appointments to the Airport Authority (out of a total of five members) less than a month before he left office. All three of the appointees were significant Johnson contributors and allies. This was slap in the face to the overwhelming majority of Jackson voters -- Johnson essentially said "OK, you may have kicked me out but I'm gonna make damned sure my buddies still get to run things!" If a Republican had done this after getting whipped by a Democrat, the JFP would be leading the charge to clean house exactly the way Melton is doing now.
